Last Call for Beginning Hebrew Classes

This will be the first and last time Rabbi Barbara teaches Hebrew for at least the next three years.  Course components: learning the Aleph Bet, how to read Hebrew, acquiring some basic vocabulary, and understanding the general content of basic Shabbat prayers.  The course meets by conference call on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m.  Please write to Rabbi Barbara at Rabbi.Thiede@or-olam.org by this Sunday, October 20 if you want more details about the class.

Please RSVP for our Bar Mitzvah in Red

Don’t forget to respond to the evite for Preston’s bar mitzvah on Saturday the 19th.  The family needs to know how many chairs to set out.  As Preston announced, it will be a beautiful service.  You can be certain that there will be lots of red….

Purim, TOO Style

We’ll make groggers and masks, nosh hamentaschen, and hear the whole megillah (while stomping feet and making noise when the dreaded name “Haman” is read, of course).  Then we’ll see who paid attention to the story in  a Family-Feud style game show.

So brush up your Esther, find yourself a costume, and bake some hamentaschen or bring a snack to share. It’s Purim, folks: You must be in costume to be allowed entrance… 🙂

A Thanks Giving Weekend

Dear Temple Or Olam Congregants and Friends,

What a weekend we have in store!  We’ll begin with tonight’s Kabbalat Shabbat service, where we’ll read from the Weldon Torah for the last time at a regular Shabbat service.  Teens and adults will be chanting tonight.  They will be using a special glass yad gifted to us by Phyllis Herschenfeld, a yad made in Venice, location of Europe’s first Jewish ghetto.

Sunday at 2 p.m. we will be welcoming guests from a number of faith traditions to our program at McGill Baptist Church with nationally known scribe and artist Neil Yerman.

In Deuteronomy 31:19 we read: “So now, write this song for yourselves.” The rabbis concluded from this verse that every Jew is commanded to write a Sefer Torah (Torah Scroll).  At 4 p.m. congregational members will be part of our siyyum, a dedication ceremony for our new Torah.  Part of our celebration will be giving the opportunity to all our congregants to write in our new scroll with Neil — an opportunity not to be missed.

And there’s more cause for thanks: A donor is matching our donations, dollar for dollar to up to $6,000 at Causes.com (see link below) and we are now well past the halfway mark for our goal at the site, which is to raise the moneys needed to purchase the scroll.  As you all know, we have additionally raised money on our own website towards our overall goal.  If you haven’t contributed yet, we ask you to consider doing so at the Causes website in order for us to receive those matching dollars from our generous friend in California! Here’s the link:

Shabbat Shalom to all — I look forward to a very special thanks-giving weekend with everyone!

A family-friendly trip for next Rosh Chodesh event

Our Rosh Chodesh group is planning something a little different for this month’s event – we are heading to a winery!  Shelton Gardens Winery holds a free Harvest Festival every October (sound familiar – Sukkot, anyone?!)  This year it is going to be on October 14th, and we are going to be there.  The festival suits folks of all age groups—even the kids!  There will be bands, dancing, vendor booths, food, and the wine tastings are free (that’s right, free wine).

Cheryl Greenwald and Marilyn Atlas will be offering carpools out of Mooresville and Troutman, and due to distance we encourage others who are interested in attending to carpool as well.

If you have any questions or would like to RSVP for the carpool, please contact Cheryl at 704 528 1432 or email her at cg@greenwalds.net.

We hope to see you and your family there!
