“May Adonai bless you and keep you…”

This next Shabbat we read the parsha which includes instructions for how the priests shall bless the people Israel. How ancient is this well-known formula? What hidden meanings are behind the words (even the number of words) in each of these three verses?

Please join us Saturday, May 22, for a Shabbat morning service that explores the power and art of blessing.

Afterwards, we’ll head off to nearby Dorton Park for our annual Shavuot picnic. We’ll supply the paper plates and napkins. Congregants and guests – please bring picnic lunches for you and yours. We’ll hold a brief memorial service and take the time to enjoy a little Torah study. Our subject? The very thing Shavuot celebrates: The giving of Torah in the first place!

Date: May 22
Time: 10 am
Note: If it’s rainy, we’ll stay at the church and have our picnic lunch inside.

Community School of Davidson invites you to their Holocaust museum

This message is from The Community School of Davidson.

The Community School of Davidson’s 6th grade class will be creating a Holocaust museum as a culminating project to our Holocaust unit study. Our middle school, transformed into a memorable museum, will be open to the public May 26th from 4pm to 8pm . Historically, the 6th grade Holocaust unit has proved to be life-changing for these students. The knowledge and compassion each student embraces during this walk through time will be poignantly displayed throughout the museum. Next board meeting

Temple Or Olam’s board meetings are open to congregants. The next meeting is on Sunday, April 25th, at 7pm, at McGill Baptist Church.

A couple of guidelines to make this easier…

1. Please notify President or Vice President of the board of the subject matter at least one week in advance, so that they can make sure it is added to the agenda. Note: You can attend without having a specific subject matter, but please still notify the President or Vide President that you will attend.
2. Members who attend may speak on other agenda items as well, with a limit of 3 minutes per agenda item.
3. There may be matters discussed at a board meeting that must be kept confidential in order to protect individual’s privacy. In that case, congregants would be asked to leave during that part of the discussion.

“The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron…”

On Friday, April 23 we read from the portion of Leviticus called Acharei Mot “after the death…” The chapter begins with grief and warnings: Aaron, the High Priest, is given instructions on how to come before God safely. In this reading, we also examine the commandments around observing an annual Day of Atonement – Yom Kippur, of course. Six months after we celebrate High Holy Days, Acharei Mot reminds us that we are striving to reach for our better selves all year around – not just one day of the year.

The Zohar also comments on Aaron’s purpose and role in this parsha – this Shabbat we’ll learn how that mystical text treats the ancient biblical one, and what we can learn from both readings.

Join us for a joyous Kabbalat Shabbat service! Details below….
