Simchat Torah Celebration

October 14, 2006

Come on out and celebrate Simchat Torah with us! We'll roll the Torah from end to end, dance a little, sing a little, and tell some really awful Jewish jokes. The Havurat Olamites who are attending religious school will also have the opportunity to create their own wooden yads (Torah pointers) as well as lead a very particular song and dance.

A rumor is going around that the rabbinic intern promised during High Holy Days to bring at least two, if not three versions of chocolate mousse (orange chocolate... rum chocolate...). All other participants are invited to demonstrate their outstanding culinary skills by bringing the sort of delicious delights we regularly see featured at Havurat Olam Events.

Please join us (and please R.S.V.P.!).

Inquiring Spirits Want to Know:

Are There Involved Layfolk Out There?

November 18, 2006

We’d like to try out some new Shabbat prayers/tunes for one thing. But we’d also like to brainstorm ways to involve layfolk in leading prayers during our Friday night services AND begin planning and developing a Shabbat morning service. If you are interested in participating, please R.S.V.P. and let us know.  We’ll meet at 4 p.m. (location to be determined) on November 18.

Adult Education:

A New Round of Classes Begins in January

Interested in knowing what you say when you say it in a service?  How about leyning (chanting) from Torah – for real, and not from a tape?  A new round of adult education classes begin next January, 2007.  If you are interested in either class, please R.S.V.P. and we’ll negotiate a time and an evening for classes.  Each course will be offered for 12 – 16 sessions, depending on the class, the number of participants, and how quickly we master the various Hebrew arts.

Details:

  • Each session will run one hour.

  • Members pay $12.50 per session if six or more enroll, and %15 with five or fewer students.

  • Non-members pay $15 per session if six or more enroll, and $17.50 with five or fewer students.

Thanks for the Memories... High Holy Days 2006

A sweet new year to everyone!  We’d like to thank everyone for their support for our expanded set of services this past year.  Special thanks to Jackie Kessler for her astonishing decorations and beautifully dressed Rosh Hashanah oneg as well as her masterful organization of our first ever community break fast.

It was wonderful to see almost every member we have--and often at least twice--during High Holy Days.  If you are not a member, but attended services, please be so kind as to help us pay our rental costs with a donation to Havurat Olam. Your donation can also go toward membership, if you would like to join our congregation. Our membership form is online for downloading.
