In Memory of Aaron Keasler

We are saddened to report that Aaron Keasler, son of Raymond “Buddy” Keasler, died unexpectedly on September 25.  Aaron had just recently turned 20.  Raymond, as many of you know, has been one of our most active and supportive members; he was the first adult bar mitzvah in Cabarrus County, will be blowing our shofar at High Holy Days Services, and he is currently studying to be a gabbai.  Raymond reads Torah at many of our services and helps each month in set-up and break-down.  Many of you may have noticed that Aaron had been attending Friday night services regularly in the past few months and had helped his father get the Havurah ready for services.

In lieu of flowers, Raymond has asked that any donations be sent to support Havurat Olam’s Torah Fund and/or Religious School.  Please send donations to Samuel Leder, Havurat Olam’s treasurer, at the address below:

You may send condolence cards to Raymond Keasler at the following address:

Thank you for your sympathies.  Our hearts go out to Raymond at this terrible time.

Sincerely,

Dr. Brian Cutler

Rosh Hashanah Notices

Bowl Fragments with Menorah, Shofar, and Torah Ark, 4th century [Metropolitan Museum of Art]

Please join us in preparing for and celebrating the new year together with friends and friends-to-be in Cabarrus County.   Rosh Hashanah services are detailed below; a reminder on Yom Kippur services will follow.

 Three important notes:

First: We do not have babysitting available for Erev Rosh Hashanah or Day 1 Rosh Hashanah services.  Older children are absolutely welcome to attend services, but if you have little ones, we will have to ask that you make arrangements privately for their care.

Second: If you are planning to attend Rosh Hashanah Day 1 service at McGill Baptist Church, please bring some oneg-style contribution for lunch; we’ll nosh on anything from bagels to lox, if you are all so inclined.

Third: We’d like to remind you that a very special second day Rosh Hashanah service is planned for beautiful Pilot Mountain State Park.  Rabbi Andrew Ettin of Temple Israel, Rabbi Marc Strauss-Cohen of Temple Emanuel, and Rabbinic Intern Dr. Barbara Thiede will lead a Renewal-style Rosh Hashanah featuring wonderful music, creative liturgy, adult biblical story-telling and Torah discussion, and special activities for the children as well.

We’ll meet at the sheltered picnic area, so please bring a picnic lunch. We will begin at 11 and finish the structured activities around 12:30. After lunch, enjoy the park trails on a nature walk and be inspired by special Rosh Hashanah “New Year of the World” meditations and reflections written for this occasion.

You may stay as long as you like or leave when you must; programmed activities should end around 2. Park information may be found at the website. Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes.
