What’s a thousand dollars?

Mere chicken feed.

A poultry matter.

Featuring... Our Members

Lynn Mangan

We thought it might be nice for you to hear from our members for a change, so we decided to ask them to speak up for themselves. Below is a message from Lynn Mangan, who has just recently been responsible for the continuing growth of our congregation. The Mangan’s fourth child, Donovan, was born Thanksgiving week).

“My first Shabbat service with congregation Havurat Olam was warm and relaxing. I knew that my family and I would fit right in even though my husband is not Jewish, nor had I any serious religious upbringing. Once talking to Barbara Thiede about a Bat Mitzvah, I knew Havurat Olam was not only for me, but for my four children and my husband. I welcome all to visit us for Shabbat service or contact me to find out more about my experiences with Havurat Olam.”

Hanukah, Oh Hanukah (and a leetle service, too)

December 15, 2006

This month we’re combining an Erev Shabbat service with our annual Hanukah celebration. Only this year, our celebration will include a tribute to that wonderful comedian, Alan Sherman, as we hear Havurat Olam’s own sing “Harvey and Sheila”  (Hava Nagila), “Shake Hands With Your Uncle Max,” and other Sherman favorites. President Brian Cutler is planning to introduce us to the 2000-year-old-man, our Religious School’s Olamites will also do a bit of their own performing, and we’ll include the annual roast of various congregational members we’ve learn to expect from Havurat Olam’s unknown but beloved lyricist.

Bring latkes, kugel, whatever else you have that’s edible and a menorah, pretty please, and join us for another Havurat Olam mother of all Hanukah parties. (Never underestimate a Jewish mother….).

Our First Ever:

Interfaith Fundraising Holiday Party

December 20, 2006

Just take a moment to meditate on that headline!  Then consider joining us for an evening of fellowship, festivities, and fabulous food! Havurat Olam and McGill Baptist Church are co-producing a celebration of Christmas and Hanukah that will feature a mahvelous dinner accompanied by a rousing musical and education program featuring children and adults from both congregations.

This is also an important fund-raising event; all proceeds benefit the religious schools of both congregations.

Program includes handbells, McGill Baptist Church adult, children, and preschool choirs, Havurat Olam’s Olamites (the little guys) acting the part of dreydels, a little Alan Sherman number or two, and performances by Concord’s local world Jewish music band Musika Olam.

Our Holiday Party Down will be held on December 20 at McGill Baptist Church, where we hold our Shabbat services. Dinner begins at 6:30, and the program begins at 7:30. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under. Tickets will be available at Havurat Olam services and Religious School and can also be purchased from Brian Cutler or Lynn Farrell. This event is open to both congregations and guests, so feel free to purchase tickets for or on behalf of friends and relatives who have an interest in supporting our religious school.

Adult Education: A New Round of Classes Begins in January

After some discussion with various attendees at HO events, it is clear to us that there’s a whole lot of yearning for Jewish learning.  So let’s get a bead on what folks need most.

  • Basic Hebrew?

  • Learning to chant Torah?
