Lotsa Services, Lotsa Stuff

November 2006

In the very, very beginning, we came together for services in our homes to celebrate the sweetness of welcoming Shabbat. Now, we’ve grown out of our homes and into not just one, but two Friday night services each month. Who would’ve thunk it?

Most months, we’ll hold a service on the second Friday of each month AND the fourth Friday of each month.  Second Fridays will feature a student-centered and child-friendly service of about 45 minutes. There will be a whole lot of singing going on, and as much as possible will be led by Dr. Barbara Thiede together with the Olamites (the children from our Religious School!). Second Friday services will run about 45 minutes in all. No babysitting available that night, folks, ‘cause the kids are with us!

Fourth Fridays will offer an adult-oriented service with a brief children’s service before-hand. The service will remain joyous, friendly, and musical. Rumors are flying around about the addition of new instruments to the Havurat Olam sound, but we’d like you to be surprised, so prepare for one. Or two. Babysitting is provided on Fourth Fridays.

We’re still fixing to conclude each service with an oneg, so y’all have time to schmooze with Jews. Please join us for our November services, and write us with any questions!

Inquiring Spirits Want to Know:

Are There Involved Layfolk Out There?

And can we Add a Mezuzah Hanging Party and a Singalong to the Show?

November 26, 2006

We’d like to try out some new Shabbat prayers/tunes for one thing.  But we’d also like to brainstorm ways to involve layfolk in leading prayers during our Friday night services AND begin planning and developing a Shabbat morning service.  If you are interested in participating, please R.S.V.P. and let us know.  We’ll meet on November 25.

Now, please bear with us.  We’re thinking about finding out if we can hang a few mezuzahs up that day, and go house to house blessing them and their doorposts.  So here’s our Havurat Olam idea.

  • We take an hour or so to bless local mezuzahs.

  • We meet for a singalong at the local JCC (y’all know that location).

  • Those who want to discuss developing a Shabbat morning service hang about for a group discussion.

We’d do the mezuzah hanging from 1 p.m. to 2:30 or so, meet for the singalong at 3-ish, and figure on discussing our Shabbaty future around 4:30 and end the day at 5.  You can sign up for all or part of the afternoon’s event, but you have to sign up and let us know what you’d like to attend (or whether your mezuzah needs to be blessed).  So please RSVP!!!  Like, soon!

Adult Education

A New Round of Classes Begins in January

After some discussion with various attendees at HO events, it is clear to us that there’s a whole lot of yearning for Jewish learning.  So let’s get a bead on what folks need most.

If you are interested in any of these educational offerings, class, please R.S.V.P. and we’ll negotiate a time and an evening for classes.  Each course will be offered for 12 – 16 sessions, depending on the class, the number of participants, and how quickly we master the various Hebrew arts.

And, please note.  If there’s something you want to learn and do not see it listed, this is Your Moment: Let us know!

 Details:

Please RSVP if you are interested and in what, and we’ll begin planning!

Thanks for the Memories... Our First Adult Bat Mitzvah EVER

What can we say?  It was an amazing, extraordinary event.  We are very, very proud of Jackie and Lynn for leading us in prayer so gently on a lovely October afternoon, for chanting Torah beautifully, and for drashing so sweetly about their experience at Havurat Olam.  Our first every bat mitzvahs were an inspiration and a joy, for which we can be really, really grateful.
