Too bad that all the people who know how to run this country are busy driving taxis or cutting hair. George Burns |

[transdenominational havurah] [services] [Annual Meeting] [Rosh Chodesh]

Question: So what denomination are you? Whom are you affiliated with?
Answer: Judaism.
Increasingly, we’re seeing the growth of independent Jewish congregations that choose not to affiliate with any denomination at all.
That’s been our choice. At Havurat Olam, we’ve decided against definitions or restrictions that might label or confine us. We’re just Jews. Some of us are intermarried. Some are not. Some of us remember Conservative services with nostalgia. Others recall the social justice message of Reform with pride. We bring our background and our history and our interests to our congregation. But once there, we decide as a community what we need and want in order to live Jewishly.
Our community is the congregation’s defining factor – not some national organization. We each choose where we want to grow in our practice and experience; we each help define the direction we take as a congregation. Our life cycle events, festivals, and services are communal and welcoming.
We combine our independence with local and communal consciousness. What denomination are we? We aren’t. We don’t have to be. We’re just Jews.
[Please note that over the summer we'll ask everyone to contribute to our onegs by bringing refreshments!]
Second Friday: A Scouting Expedition at our Family Shabbat June 8, 2007
Get ready to go back in time for a scouting expedition. This Shabbat, we’re going to take a walk on the wild side in the land of Canaan. We’ll interview the natives and check out the produce. Once we scout out the land and its inhabitants, we’ll make some important decisions. Are the people ready for nation-building? Is the land we were promised a land we want?
Second Fridays feature a student-centered and child-friendly service. Parents of small children please note that children attending Second Friday services must be able to take part in a 45-minute service. If your child is too young to do so, please make sure an adult in attendance can attend to that child’s needs so that the service is not disrupted.
Fourth Friday: Featuring a Talking Four-legged Torah Creature (Really!): June 22, 2007
![]() |
Join us for a look at the only part of Torah that features a talking animal besides the Famous Snake. This week’s portion features the amazing story of Balaam (the author of Ma Tovu) and his loquacious, umm, donkey. It turns out that the donkey has better sense than her master…. Fourth Fridays offer an adult-oriented service. The service includes a Torah reading and will provide a joyous, friendly, and musical atmosphere. The congregation provides babysitting services on Fourth Fridays. We’re still fixing to conclude each service with an oneg, so y’all have time to schmooze with Jews. Please join us, and write with any questions! |

Ladies, tell us what you know. We'd like to ask our Rosh Chodesh participants to take part in this month's meeting by
bringing a bit of knowledge about some Jewish woman (historical, familial, or biblical),
telling a tale of tradition (what did mom or bubbe do at your house for this or that holiday?),
asking a question about women's roles in Judaism (why do women light Shabbat candles?).
Snacks are welcome, and, as usual, we'll plunk a little spare change into our official Rosh Chodesh tzedakkah box to put towards a charity contribution at the end of the year.
Lades, feel free to bring friends - if they are female!
