Rabbi Zalman points out that the havurah movement started in reaction against "jumbo-jet Judaism," the congregations in which the message is, "Sit down, fasten your seat belts, stay out of the aisles, and the professionally trained crew will take care of you and get you to your destination promptly. Push the call button if you need something."

Havurat Olam's Chicken Soup Committee

Chicken Soup is good for body and soul, so we've put together a committee to take care of both. Headed by Sandy Cole, the Havurat Olam Chicken Soup committee is responsible for arranging emergency care for community members in need.

Just now, we do have a member who is on weekly chemotherapy and fighting a serious disease. We are asking for anyone who thinks they could help supply a dinner, or part of a dinner once every six to eight weeks to please contact Sandy Cole at her email address (lensandycole@msn.com) so that we can help someone who needs us.

Summer Vacation and Sing-Along

Given that most everyone we know is our on vacation in some exotic location (like Fayetteville), we will not hold services this month. But please let us know if you are interested in participating in a Friday night sing-along on July 23. We'll cover Israeli, Yiddish, and liturgical tunes we know and don't know. We'll chant in Hebrew (or transliteration), learn a little about the origins of some of our favorite songs, and warble until we drop. Bring your own favorites! Bring your kids! But first, please let us know you are coming.

We'll decide on our location based on the numbers of RSVPs we receive. We must ask you toe RSVP by our deadline. Please let us know if you would like to attend by July 17, and we'll let you know where we'll meet.

Havurat Olam is a Membership Organization!

A havurah is all about community, and we are building one. This year, we're planning for two High Holy Day services, our usual wild, wooly, and wacky celebrations of all major Jewish holidays complete with crafts, plays, and the usual song and dance, monthly services, and a variety of social events and activities. We plan to celebrate at least two bar mitzvahs this year, in addition to any baby namings, marriages, or other life-cycle events that come along. (Let us know!)

Havurat Olam has prepared for its second year by establishing criteria for membership. While anyone can join services and social events on a pay-as-you-go basis, we will be suggesting a $10 donation per adult at each service beginning in August in order to cover the costs incurred in renting facilities.

For those who are interested in our membership option, please contact Membership Coordinator Danielle Levin at dplevin2003@hotmail.com for more information and membership forms. All members who join before the Festival of Lights begins (yup, that means Chanukah!) will be regarded as Havurat Olam founding members.

Membership types include:

Family membership $150 per family
Single membership  $75 per member
Student / military  $50 per member
Senior  $50 per member

Last, but not least, we've got some amazing news for everyone. But we'll wait until you get back from vacation, okay?
