If the rich could hire other people

to die for them,

the poor could make a wonderful living.

Featuring... Our Members

Ruth and Arthur Kingberg

We thought it might be nice for you to hear from our members now and again, so we’ve been asking them to speak up for themselves. Ruth and Arthur Kingberg are among our oldest members (they joined us right at the get-go). You might take a look at our leyning table sometime, where we lay the Torah for our readings. Arthur built it and Ruth covered it!

Both Arthur and Ruth were very active in their previous congregation, Temple Shalom in Norwalk, Connecticut--Arthur was the chairman of the Building Committee, and Ruth was in charge of the temple onegs.

“It’s been a great experience to be a member of this new congregation in Concord.” Arthur says. “It’s like a new world!” “The congregation is the most outstanding organization with lovely people,” Ruth adds. “There is no other organization more down to earth than this one.”

Feel free to talk to our members if you would like more information about Havurat Olam. Just call 704.784.4616, and we’ll suggest some folks for you to talk to.

Don't know our tunes? We have the answer.

Three years ago, we recorded a selection of Shabbat tunes.  This year we’re in the process of adding oodles of new melodies at our services.  But there’s no need to find yourself flummoxed, because we are offering a new CD with 29 cuts of Shabbat prayers.  Recorded at a local studio this past fall, Shirim L’Shabbat includes a booklet that describes the source of each prayer and its exact location in our prayerbook.  We included a couple of children’s songs as well, and the very popular Ivdu to make sure you tap your toes while listening!

If you are interested, let us know.  We’ll mail you the CD on receipt of a check to Havurat Olam for $18.  Please send checks to

Second and Fourth Friday Services this Month

January 12 and 26, 2007

After some discussions with parents of Very Young Children who can’t stay out so very late, we’ve decided to confuse everyone. Most months, we’ll hold a service on the second Friday of each month AND the fourth Friday of each month. Every now and again, however, we’ll move our second Friday service to a brief Saturday morning service followed by muffinny snack). Don’t panic!! We’ll keep you updated and clarified via our Shmoozeletter and the occasional extra reminder.

Just as a reminder: second Fridays feature a student-centered and child-friendly service. There will be a whole lot of singing going on, led as much as possible by the children from our Religious School!). Second Friday services will run about 45 minutes in all. No babysitting available that night, folks, ‘cause the kids are with us!

Fourth Fridays offer an adult-oriented service with a brief children’s service before-hand. The service will remain joyous, friendly, and musical.  Babysitting is provided on Fourth Fridays.

We’re still fixing to conclude each service with an oneg, so y’all have time to schmooze with Jews. Please join us for our January services, and write us with any questions!

Report on our First Ever Interfaith Fundraising Holiday Party

Over 150 people showed up for our Hanukkah-Christmas concert, dinner, and party-down at McGill Baptist Church. Folks chowed down on turkey, sweet potato, greens, and homemade latkes, listened in as the children from both congregations spontaneously collaborated on Ochos Kandelikas (it was a BIG menorah that night), and everyone danced to Hava Nagila. The event was covered in area papers (Beth Feeback of the Concord Standard and Mt. Pleasant Times) wrote an absolutely stunning piece) and Havurat Olam and McGill Baptist raised funds for their Religious Schools.

Thanks to all who made this event such a rousing success (we’ve been stopped in the grocery store by folks who were there and want a repeat experience…). Special thanks to Brian Cutler, Jackie Kessler, and Lynn Farrell for all their efforts.

Happy New Year to everyone. Get ready, get set, go! Tu B’shevat and Purim are just around the corner…
