[Friday Night Services] [Erev Shabbat study session]

Friday Night Services

With Preliminary Children's Service

January 20, 2006

Was it the harp, the lyre, or the flute?  Just what did the Levites play for services in the very olden days?  We’re heading back to the days of the Temple in Jerusalem to find out during this month’s children’s service.  Kids should feel free to bring musical instruments they play at home (though we will also provide some), and we’ll compare.  Is there such a thing as a kinor in our havurah orchestra?  How about a tof?  We’ll finish our service with the psalm that names them all.

Kabbalat Shabbat (welcoming Shabbat) will continue at 6:50, and adult services will get into full swing by 7 p.m.  Please bring a leetle something to nosh at the oneg following services.  We will meet at McGill Baptist Church in Concord

More Shabbat on Shabbat

A Two-part Program

January 27, 2006

What’s the why as well as the how of Shabbat services?  Barbara Thiede will lead a two-part Erev Shabbat study session.  Our first study session, scheduled for January 27, will include exploring the first part of the Shabbat service, beginning with Kabbalat Shabbat, moving through the Barchu and Shema.  Our second session (scheduled for February – time to be announced), will explore the Amidah, the Mourner’s Kaddish, and the Aleinu.

After study, practice.  We’ll look at our Likrat Shabbat prayerbook and identify the parts of the service we’ve just explored.  We’ll close a few extra-beautiful Shabbat melodies.
