Sholem Asch
Dec. 01, 2003 Volume I, Issue I

Normally, we hold services on the third Friday of each month. But please take note: this December, our services will be held on December 12 so as not to compete with the first night of Hanukah. Please join us for an accessible, comfortable, and welcoming spiritual experience. Or just show up for the company: Havurat Olam is composed of an eclectic, intelligent, and relaxed bunch of Jewish and Interfaith families. We top off each service with an Oneg Shabbat, and we guarantee fellowship, friendship, and fun.
Services are held at the centrally located and fully accessible St. James Lutheran Church in Concord, which is situated on the corner of Corban and Union. Enter the parking lot from Corban and come in through the back entrance. Walk down the short hall and turn left. We will meet in the classroom on the left.
We ask you to arrive by 6:45 p.m. because we are a punctual crowd!?! Services will start at 7:00 p.m. and last one hour or less.
Please bring something tasty and delicious (edible also works) to share for the Oneg Shabbat. Until such time as we have a budget and have collected dues, we are charging $3 per person (children included) to cover basic costs of the facilities.
We'd also like to ask you to attend with your Friday night siddur (prayer book). We have a few extra prayer books on hand for guests, but those who plan to attend regularly should purchase one or more. Please contact our Religious Services Coordinator, Brian Cutler, if you are in need of a copy of our beautiful siddur, Likrat Shabbat, at blcutler@email.uncc.edu.

Get out your menorahs and hunt for those elusive dreydels! Havurat Olam is planning the mother (Jewish, of course) of all Hanukah parties for Sunday, December 21.
Our havurat children, the Olamites, will present a Hanukah play featuring the tunes of Gilbert and Sullivan (with lyrics to suit our own heroic story). Show up for the talent show from Havurat Olam actors, comedians, and musicians (we KNOW there's a bit planned on the all-important question: Why Do Jews Love Chinese Food?).
If you aren't interested in all the entertainment, at least come for the LATKES. Lots of latkes…
For any questions, contributions, or suggestions for our festivities, please email Head of Hanukah Operations Guru, Maxine Fairchild at avimax@juno.com.

The Olamettes, our wild and wooly women's group, does it all: kvetch, kvell, and plan parties. The Olamettes will meet this December 14 at 5:30 to hammer out any last-minute Hanukah details. Join them, and you'll (re)discover just how much fun those Jewish princesses can be, after all.
For directions to the next Olamette meeting, please contact info@havuratolam.org.

Whew. Did you make it to the end of our very first newsletter? If so, you gave us such naches!! We're proud of you, of course, and expect to see you at the end of every single one. And at the (our) beginning. Please see what you can do to join us at services, at festivities, at anything we can offer you to make you feel at home with Havurat Olam. |
